These magnificent giant ice palaces rank among the greatest natural wonders of the Alps. People come from all over the world come to admire these subterranean Dachstein ice caves. Gigantic cave glaciers, vast icebergs, frozen cascades of blue-coloured ice and "ice chapels" are just some of the highlights of your tour. These caves are the perfect refuge for humans and animals on cold, rainy days - just as they have been for thousands of years - and on a hot summer's day they are a welcome contrast to the outside world. Caves are like ancient historic documents - a record of how the world has changed over time. Your tour guide will explain the findings of scientists who have tried to unravel the secrets of the earth's history. Free admission to the "Caves Museum" while the caves are open to visitors.


Zwölferhorn - Mountain Cable Car, Konrad-Lesiak-Platz 3, 5340 St. Gilgen
The Zwölferhorn Mountain in St. Gilgen - the most beautiful vantage point in the Salzkammergut with views into the distance and a sun terrace.The Hiking Paradise for both Young and Old! This well-maintained cable car is unique in Austria. There is a certain nostalgia in the air as soon as you climb into one of its original gondolas.  Because of its gentle and smooth speed, the ascent feels as if you are floating upwards between Lake Wolfgangsee and Lake Fuschlsee.  There are plenty of walks up on the summit and the Illinger Alm circular walk is particularly attractive with its interesting, themed route.  Various huts encourage you to pop in and they offer special local delicacies.

This is an amazing experience for all, regardless of the weather. In 1734 the fully preserved body of a prehistoric miner was found in the Hallstatt Salt Mine, known today as the "Man in Salt". Join an escorted tour of the Hallstatt Salt Worlds and examine the most sensational location of finds in the Alps – the place where the "Man in Salt" was found over 300 years ago.
The true story of the "Man in the Salt" begins in the "Miners' House". Throughout the tour you will discover fascinating facts about the history of the salt mines. Two long miners' slides take you deep undeground to the mystic salt lake. A mine train returns you safely and comfortably back into the daylight. Sturdy footwear and warm clothing are essential. The Hallstatt Higher Valley. The Hallstatt miners used to live in this Higher Valley which can be reached today by mine train in just a few minutes. The new "Panorama Lift" and the viewing bridge allow you to enjoy the famous "World Heritage View" towards Hallstatt, the lake and surrounding mountains. There is a special theme trail through the burial ground, 2 exhibitions as well as a "show grave". For those who wish to learn more, an audio guide is available to hire in 10 languages and costs 2 Euros. This is available from the salt mine train ticket counter. A visit to the beautiful sun terrace at the "Rudolfsturm" restaurant for refreshments is highly recommended.


Schafberg Mountain Railway, Markt 35, 5360 St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut
Take a leisurely trip on this classic, olde worlde cog-railway up the Schafberg Mountain to a height of 1,783 metres. The steepest, steam cog-railway in Austria has been ascending the Schafberg Mountain from St. Wolfgang since 1893. It takes 35 minutes to reach the summit, covering an ascent of 1,190 metres over 5.85 km. The long-established cog railway's steam engines count amongst the oldest working engines in the world, though even with the more modern steam engines, a journey up the Schafberg Mountain is an unforgettable experience. The view from the summit (1,783 m) is the most magnificent in the world-famous Salzkammergut. On a clear day there is a 360° panoramic view over the glittering lakes of the Salzkammergut (eg Lakes Wolfgangsee, Irrsee, Mondsee and Fuschlsee) to Lake Chiemsee in Germany in the foothills of the Alps. All around, the mountains soar majestically, from the Höllengebirge range over the Dachstein Mountains to the Watzmann Mountain. Wolfgangsee Boats, Markt 35 , 5360 St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut
Ship ahoy on Lake Wolfgangsee! The passenger boat company on Lake Wolfgangsee has been in operation since the times of the last great Emperor. The paddle steamer "Kaiser Franz Josef I" was first launched in 1873 and was hailed at the time as a “technical achievement”. The 33 metre long nostalgic vessel has starred in numerous films and is still part of the fleet. Today, the fleet numbers 6 vessels with the flagship “Salzburg” at the forefront. The largest boat is the "Österreich" (Austria), which can accommodate 365 passengers. The traditional Lake Wolfgangsee fleet of boats belonging to the "Wolfgangsee Schifffahrt" company, with its historic paddle steamer the "Kaiser Franz Josef" and four other passenger boats links the three villages around Lake Wolfgangsee in the most romantic way! If preferred, there are also private boating companies operating on Lake Wolfgangsee.


Imperial Villa, 4820 Bad Ischl
Over many decades and into the 20th century European history was made in the Kaiservilla and Bad Ischl became the shadow capital of the powerful Danube Monarchy. You can see the originally preserved chambers, in which Empress “Sisi” Elisabeth spent her summer months and were Emperor Franz Joseph ruled and eventually declared war to Serbia in 1914 and started WWI with it. His reasons for doing so he stated in his “To my Peoples” manifesto that was written here. On a 45-minute long guided tour you can experience the special air of past times and you can get interesting and personal information on the life of the imperial family. Kaiservilla is surrounded by the spacious Kaiserpark that invites to longer walks and is home to the former tea house of Empress Elisabeth, the Marmorschlössl. Can be only visited on a guided tour!

Heritage Museum, J. Pichler Platz 6 , 5340 St. Gilgen
The Wetzl- or Einsiedlerhäusl-house, built in 1655, is the place where you can find out some things about the Local History of the Community St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee. Shortly after the Thirty Years War this house was erected because at that time the bobbin lace making developed to be an important cottage industry of St. Gilgen. Of particular interest among the exhibition items ist the portrayal of the Salzburger bobbin lace. This house, which displays a remarkable collection of sacred items, also served as home for close relatives of the well known and famous W. A. Mozart.
